Things didn’t go very well for Patty Mills and Saint Mary’s Monday night in the WCC tournament final.
The Gaels trailed 1-0 before the opening tip thanks to a technical foul for dunking in pregame warm ups. No. 12 Gonzaga blasted the Gaels 83-58 to earn an NCAA bid for the 11th-straight season.
Thanks to the recent return of Mills to the lineup, most experts have St. Mary’s in the Big Dance. But the Gaels are certainly uneasy after looking awful last night.
Mills shot just 2-16 against the Zags as he continues to recover from his broken hand. The NCAA selection committee figures to be less likely to give St. Mary’s an at-large with the star guard clearly not 100 percent.
St. Mary’s is 6-3 without Mills and 19-3 with the Aussie in the lineup. The WCC was fairly weak this season, especially with the unexpected struggles of San Diego, a NCAA tournament darling last season.
The Gaels will likely be competing against several teams from the Mountain West Conference for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Strong performances from New Mexico and San Diego State in the MWC tournament could send St. Mary’s to the NIT.
