I considered Baylor to be a top-25 team heading into the season. But after getting off to a solid start, the Bears hit a skid and need to win the Big 12 tournament to reach the Big Dance.
It could happen.
LaceDarius Dunn has a crazy first name and scored 24 points to lead Baylor to a 71-64 victory over top-seeded No. 11 Kansas.
Baylor led by 17 early, but blew the lead and trailed by five before going on a 12-0 late to seal the victory.
The Bears has some quality wins and some really good players, including Dunn and Curtis Jerrells. Early season wins against against Providence, Arizona State, and Portland State makes an NIT berth a certainty.
A 5-12 record in Big 12 play torpedoed what was once a promising season for Baylor.
The loss doesn’t really hurt Kansas, although the Jayhawks will no longer receive consideration for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. It was a long shot anyway, and some rest might be good for Bill Self’s young team.
Baylor’s quality guard-play gives it a realistic shot to win the Big 12 tournament. Stay tuned.
