Ben Jacobson probably won’t be the coach of Northern Iowa 10 years from now, but Wednesday the school took a costly step to keep him from leaving just yet.

UNI announced Jacobson has agreed to a new 10-year deal worth a guaranteed $450,000 with increases starting at $25,000 annually.  The 39 year-old Jacobson’s previous contract was paying him around $290,000 per season through the 2015-2016 campaign.

Northern Iowa AD Troy Dannen announced the extension in a statement shortly after Jacobson’s Panthers left for Saint Louis Wednesday.

It will be interesting to see if Jacobson even bothers to listen to offers following his team’s run in the NCAA Tournament.  He is certain to draw interest from several schools, including the University of Iowa.

Don’t expect him to leave this year, but it would be surprising to see Jacobson stay in Cedar Falls for too much longer.
